Sutro Tower Sunsets

Nature’s finest fireworks in stills and timelapses.

Sutro Tower has been part of the landscape since 1973 and helped improve the TV reception for all 4 of the local stations. It was designed to solve the problem with all the SF hills blocking the line of sight signal. It has since become an icon of the city. The much revered Herb Caen, chronicler of all things San Francisco, once remarked, “I keep waiting for it to stalk down the hill and attack the Golden Gate Bridge.” I heard that it actually did that once, but as they say, if you remember the 70’s you weren’t there. Or maybe that was the 60’s. I don’t remember.

Through much of the summer Sutro Tower is hidden on the other side of the coastal fog — many times the tower is the only part of San Francisco visible from the air. And in the evenings we are sometimes graced with a combination of fast moving clouds, fog and a clear sunset as it sets into the West behind Diamond Heights.

Fog Timelapses

Occasionally I get my act together and rush out just in time with a tripod and a camera of some sort. These timelapses were created with DSLRs, DJI Osmo Pocket or the iPhone 11 Pro.
